Seamen learn the basics of sailing and spend most of their time in Optimist dinghies. After an initial instruction period, they sail around the inner bay by themselves or with a friend in an Optimist or with an instructor in a Fast Cat. Seamen learn sailing terminology, seamanship, both helming and crewing, rigging, docking, basic right of way rules, knots, the fundamentals of navigation and on-water safety.
