V-15 News Letter

June 30, 2009

6/27 Recap -  What a great first day of sailing!  Sunny skies, an excellent breeze and 5 Boats made for some really fun racing.  Although I missed the first race(after showing up to a dismasted boat and having to scramble and get the Club Boat going,  more on that later),  I was so glad I disregarded the gloomy forecast and instead ended the day exhilarated and even sunburned.   Who woulda thought....sunburned!?  Even with low tide right after the first start,  there was plenty of water to race 5 Windward/Leewards and plenty of shifts to keep it interesting even if you messed up your start and had to catch up.

One downer is that, due to a miscommunication, the scores were not recorded.  If you raced and remember your finishes, please email me with what you think your finishes were. If everyone agrees,  I'll score it that way.  Otherwise,  we might have to figure out another way to reward Saturday's participants (plus we need to figure out who gets that bottle of wine ;-).  I have myself at DNS-4-?-2-2,  but I'm not positive

Next race day is a week from this Saturday (7/11).  But I plan on taking the V-15 out for the Kiley race with 4 people, a cooler.....and maybe even a dog.  Hopefully I'll see you out there.......

WHO NEEDS CREW?  A really nice couple and avid Comet sailors who recently moved from,  of all places,  the Mississippi River are looking to crew on a V-15.  Contact me if you're interested in having them sail with you.

Now.  About that dismasting.  I had left the forestay fairly slack and it looks like during the heavy breezes last week the mast was swinging to and fro (as evident by the grinding away of material on butt end of the mast) and eventually snapped the forestay right at the top swage.  Luckily it landed harmlessly to the side of the boat and all it took was a new forestay, new mast butt, hex screws and 30 minutes and she's no worse for the wear.  Nevertheless,  my lesson learned is to make sure I snug up the forestay,  before I leave for any extended amount of time.

That's it for now....

Happy Sailing!
